Let’s Talk Linens: What to Know About Terry Cloth

When picking out a luxury bath towel, you may not be looking for a specific type of weave style. For most shoppers, it may not even occur to them that how a towel or robe is woven together can greatly increase their effectiveness. If you’re looking for true, high-quality luxury that’s super soft and super absorbent, you should look for products that are made from terry cloth the next time you go shopping for a robe or towel. This weave style is used by several top of the line brands that we have here at Pioneer Linens!

What is Considered Terry Cloth?

Many of the towels and robes we offer here at Pioneer Linens, whether part of our signature collection or sold by our own vendors, are considered “terry cloth”, but what exactly does this mean?

At first glance, you might assume the term “terry cloth” refers to the materials making up the towel or robe. It actually refers to the type of weaving used to in sowing the fabric. This style of weaving has numerous open loops protruding from the fabric. This makes the towel or robe using this style more absorbent, as the loops are able to capture the water more effectively.

This design was popularized by Turkey in the mid 19th century, and is still used in many high quality towels and robes to this day. Terry cloth is generally made from pure 100% cotton, though in some cases another material like polyester. The reason cotton is the standard for material used for creating towels and robes is that it is by far the most absorbent, so make sure you’re looking for 100% cotton if you want the highest level luxury you can get.

How to Take Care of Terry Cloth

When given proper attention and cleaned properly, towels and rugs made from terry cloth can last you a very long time. Here are some tips to keep your terry cloth products taken care of for years to come!

-            Avoid using powerful cleaners like bleach. While you might get rid of the stain, it can have a harsh effect on the towel or robe itself, even if they are plain white. This is because bleach eventually ruins the cotton, making them look worn out a lot faster. Instead, use a cleaner that is strong on stains but still gentle on the material, like the laundry care collection by Le Blanc. All their cleaners use a neutral pH formula to achieve this, and you can find them here at Pioneer Linens!

-            Avoid washing towels with clothes, especially colored. Also don’t use dryer sheets or any kind of fabric softener, as that can cause the towel to build up too much residue.

-            Read the towel or robe’s care tag in order to find out how the manufacturer recommends you take care of the product. Using the laundry care products we provide from Le Blanc should be enough, but the manufacturer’s care instructions should always be followed first.
