What is Egyptian Cotton?

When it comes to the difference between Egyptian Cotton and standard cotton, let’s start with its origins. As the name implies, the plants are grown primarily in Egypt. This is because Egypt offers the perfect climate for cotton plants, letting them grow extra-long and fine. It is because of these growing conditions that it is regarded as the best when it comes to softness and durability. In fact, the difference in quality is so great that it is only labelled as ‘Egyptian Cotton’ when it comes from Egypt.

Differences Between Egyptian Cotton and Regular Cotton

Aside from where the cotton is grown, there are still quite a few important factors that separate Egyptian cotton and regular cotton. During the manufacturing process, Egyptian cotton is hand-picked rather than machine-picked like regular cotton. While hand-picking the cotton is more time-consuming, it allows for the cotton to be handled more delicately, unlike machines which may splice the fibers, reducing its softness and overall lifespan.

Egyptian cotton is also more absorbent, allowing for colors to be absorbed better during the dying process. This also makes it suitable for those suffering from night sweats. It tends to be woven together in a cotton percale weave, which allows for the material to be more breathable than your average cotton bed sheet.

How to Wash and Take Care of Egyptian Cotton Bed Sheets

Because of Egyptian cottons higher quality, you’ll want to make sure that they last as long as possible, which is why we’re giving you some simple advice on taking care of them, as well as how to wash them.

1.       Wash your bed sheets weekly, use cold water (40 degrees Celsius), and make sure to avoid using fabric softener as that reduce the fabrics life span.

2.       Wash separately from towels or regular clothing, as this can result in friction and pilling.

3.       If possible, dry your bed linens by hanging them on a line outside, as this is the gentlest method. You could also tumble dry on the lowest temperature for similar results.

4.       When making your bed, rotate the bedding to make sure that the same spots aren’t don’t get worn every use.
