Lets Talk Linens: Quilt vs Coverlet

When putting together your bedroom, you might consider adding a quilt or a coverlet in order to finish creating your ideal bedspread. While being far more aesthetically pleasing, these two types of bed coverings still offer much in regard to comfort. Quilts and coverlets, however, have a few key differences that you should know about before you decide on which one you’ll be getting.

What is The Difference Between Quilts and Coverlets?

Both quilts and coverlets are bed coverings that serve the same purpose but are different enough that you might care about choosing one over the other. Most bedding stores will offer quilts, so they may be more recognizable. Coverlets, however, are generally higher quality and are often associated with luxury linen.

What is a Coverlet?

A coverlet (often mistaken for a quilt) serves as the top layer of all your bedding, meaning it goes over all of your sheets for decorative purposes. It is made a lot lighter than a duvet cover or a comforter, though it is not as long as other types of bedspreads. Coverlets are made very thin, making them ideal for warmer climates or hotter weather. Even then, you could still use them in colder climates accompanied by heavier bed sets and bed sheets.

What is a Quilt?

Quilts have been a standard type of bedspread for a very long time and aren’t as recent as coverlets. Unlike coverlets, a quilt is made with three layers of fabric: a plain bottom layer, a middle layer with light padding, and a top layer with the decorative design. They aren’t made from the same single layer, so they are usually only used for colder climates.

What is Better for Me? Quilts or Coverlets?

While a coverlet is purely decorative, a quilt can be used decoratively AND for warmth as well. The typical three-layer design for quilts, however, limits their use, as they are far less comfortable in hot weather. In other words, a coverlet paired with heavier sheets could be used to effectively replace a quilt, and during hotter seasons you can simply store the heavier sheets and continue using the coverlet without replacing it.

Coverlets are much smaller than quilts. This means that they are only to be used for bedding and can’t be used for other purposes like a quilt, which could also serve as a table runner or a wall hanging.

Quilts are often put together by multiple pieces of fabric, with the top layer sometimes being a single solid layer called the “whole-cloth quilt,” whereas coverlets are made from using a single fabric to create a cohesive decorative piece.

Recommendation on Quilt or Coverlet for Florida Residents

With Florida being our main place of business, we feel that we should make a recommendation for all our fellow Florida residents. With coverlets having a clear advantage in warmer climates, you will find them far more comfortable year-round than you would a quilt. Unless you are purchasing a bed covering to be used in a colder climate or planning on using a quilt for non-bedding-related reasons, we recommend going with a coverlet.

We recommend checking brands we offer with a WIDE selection. Matouk has a large assortment of coverlets and quilts, and while Signoria only has a handful of coverlets, we recommend checking out their collection as well!
