Let’s Talk Linens: Mattress Pad vs Mattress Protector

As part of Pioneer Linen’s ongoing blogs to answer questions our customers may have regarding some of the products we sell, here we are going to be talking about the key differences between mattress pads and mattress protectors so that you can know which of the two will serve you best.

To someone unfamiliar with bedding products, a mattress pad and a mattress protector might sound like the same exact thing. In reality both types of bedding have two very similar yet distinct purposes. Mattresses, even with a fitted sheet, go through a lot from being used daily, and will suffer stains, dirt, and many allergens. While this is generally what most people use them for, there are certain benefits one will give you over the other.

What is a Mattress Pad?

A mattress pad is meant to serve as a cushioned layer put over the mattress wrapped under fitted sheet. Aside from protecting your mattress from anything that might leak through the fitted sheet, it also makes the mattress feel a lot softer than it normally would.

Usually, a mattress pad is made with a waterproof layer, and the whole thing is around 1 to 2 inches tall. How a mattress pad feels can vary depending on the materials used within it, which can be wool, polyester, down feather, or most popularly cotton.

Which Mattress Pad Material is the Best?

Each material has its own advantages and disadvantages, however. Cotton is super soft and breathable, which is ideal for some people who run hot when they sleep. Down feather is great at keeping cool and is another soft option, though it does need to be readjusted and fluffed on a regular basis. Polyester is a cheaper synthetic material, and it is often considered as an alternative to cotton, and it is still comparably soft and cool, so much so that it is often mixed with it. Lastly, we have wool, which is soft, hypoallergenic, AND absorbs sweat and moisture!

What is a Mattress Protector?

A mattress protector is a lot thinner than a mattress pad. It is similar to a fitted sheet and contains no padding of any kind. Because of this, it doesn’t change how your mattress feels or make it any softer.

Are Mattress Protectors Waterproof?

A mattress protector can sometimes be waterproof, preventing spills or sweat from seeping into the mattress. This is usually thanks to a thin layer within the protector made out of a material called “polyurethane”. Despite the use of this material, mattress protectors are still very much breathable and can still keep you cool throughout the night.

Do Mattress Protectors Prevent Bed Bugs?

Though some mattress protectors ward off bed bugs, they don’t prevent them completely. The only way to do so would be to get something akin to a complete mattress cover that protects the whole by encasing the whole thing.

Which is Better a Mattress Pad or a Mattress Protector?

This really depends on what it is you need for your mattress. If you are looking to soften your bed and at least protect it somewhat, a mattress pad is your best bet.

However, if you are fine with how comfortable your mattress is and want to protect it more efficiently from liquids and ward off bed bugs, a specialized mattress protector is what you should be looking into!
