Let’s Talk Linens: How to Put On a Duvet Cover

What Exactly Is a Duvet Cover?

Putting together your first bedspread should be simple yet fun; however, some bed coverings require a bit more effort than just rolling out sheets. Take a duvet cover, for example. Often confused for comforters, a duvet cover is a removable protector for a “duvet insert” (which CAN be a comforter), similar to how pillows have pillowcases. Duvet covers can vary from having buttons, zippers, or clips to keep them shut. All of this is to ensure that the duvet insert doesn’t get filthy, though you’ll typically still want to clean your duvet cover at least once a week.

Assuming your duvet cover does not require external clips or ties, the only things you’ll need are the duvet cover, the duvet insert, and the bed itself. Let us show you the perfect step-by-step guide to putting on your duvet cover, along with our very own Marissa and Camille Murphy to offer you some tips!

Tip 1: Keep the Tag at the Foot of the Bed

Starting with just a simple setup, place your comforter on your bed with the duvet cover on top of it. Make sure the comforter’s tag is facing down toward the foot of the bed and that the opening of the duvet cover is facing the same way.

Tip 2: Turn the Duvet Cover Inside-Out

This tip might be confusing to follow without showing it, so we highly recommend following the above video to get a better idea, but regardless, we will try to describe these instructions as best as we can. Put your hand in the duvet cover opening all the way through, then grab the corner in order to make the duvet cover inside out.

Tip 3: Tie/Clip Your Comforter and Duvet Cover Corners

Some duvet covers have built-in ties to prevent the comforter from leaving the duvet cover for this next step. If yours does not have these ties, you will need to purchase clips in order to prevent the comforter from leaving the duvet insert. With your inside-out duvet cover, attach the built-in ties to the top of the comforter (if you’re using clips, attach the inside corner of the duvet cover to the comforter’s top corners instead). Once locked in place, you can roll the duvet cover over the comforter while holding onto that connected corner from the outside of the duvet cover.
