What is the Purpose of a Bed Skirt?
A bed skirt is meant to do more than just add some style; its original purpose is to hide the bottom of your bed. As the nickname “dust ruffle” suggests, it also stops dust from getting underneath the bed. It’s also worth noting that the terms are interchangeable and calling it either a bed skirt or a dust ruffle is accurate.
Why Might Bed Skirts be Considered Outdated?
Bed Skirts still work for their intended purpose, however many of them are made with an older design that some people see as “inconvenient”. The traditional bed skirt was a single piece of fabric that required you to take out the whole mattress and put it on top of the box spring, which can be pretty difficult and time-consuming.
Modern day bed skirts have 2 panels for both sides of the bed and one at the foot of the bed, with an elastic band to hold it all together on the top of the box spring. Thanks to the new type of box spring being detachable, you no longer have to remove the mattress to use it.
What Type of Bed Frame Would You Want to Use a Bed Skirt?
As nice as a bed skirt may look, some don’t look appealing on certain bed frames. If you’re considering getting yourself a bed skirt or a dust ruffle, be sure that your bed frame is not already low to the ground.
A good example for how a bed skirt that fits its bed frame would be the Vienna Matelassé Tailored Bed Skirts by Peacock Alley. Made with a 17th century French design, its centered kick pleats hide the open frame underneath, while wrapping the extra panels along the bed with 8 L pins.
Some bed frames are made to be decorative themselves. In those cases, you may want to allow the bed frame to show and may consider other options such as coverlets or throw blankets.
