Let’s Talk Linens: Difference Between a King and California King Bedding

When purchasing a bed set for your King-sized bed, you should make sure that you’re getting the exact right size, since King and California King are two very different sizes. In this blog post we will go over any questions you might have regarding the two different sizes, while also offering a few examples for what we have to offer. Are King and California King Interchangeable?

Despite the two being very different sizes in some respects, most items for your bed will be interchangeable. Depending on the bedding manufacturer, the duvet cover, down comforter, flat sheet, shams, and pillowcases are all usually the same size.

The only two items for King and California King bedding that are never interchangeable are the fitted sheet and the dust ruffle. In other words, if you’re putting together a bed set, the fitted sheet and dust ruffle are the first and only two you should ensure are the right size.

This same difference applies to Queen bedding and Full bedding, where all of their options are interchangeable except for the fitted sheet and dust ruffle.

What are the Exact Sizes for a King and California King?

While there are some variations in size, (also depending on the bedding manufacturer), a King mattress is normally 76” X 80”. Meanwhile, a California King Mattress is normally 72” X 84”. In case you are still putting together a new room and have yet to pick out a mattress size, let us walk you through the pros and cons of each one.

Pros of a King Mattress

-            King sized mattresses are a bit wider than California Kings

-            They are much more common and easier to find

-            Much more fitting for short and wide rooms

Cons of a King Mattress

-            May not be ideal for tall sleepers

Pros of a California King Mattress

-            A California King mattress is longer than a King

-            Great for sleepers that are 6ft or taller

-            Better for more narrow rooms

Cons of a California King Mattress

-            Not as common or easy to find as a regular King

-            Though their bedding will usually cost the same, a California King mattress is usually more expensive
