Let’s Talk Linens: Bath Sheets vs Bath Towels

Some customers struggle to decide between bath sheets and bath towels, as while their sizes are very different, that small difference between the two can affect how pleasant of a drying experience you have! At Pioneer Linen’s, we have over 100 years of experience and are well equipped to advise you on which to decide on depending on the situation.

What is a Bath Towel?

Most bath towels are made 28 x 55 inches, though this scale can sometimes vary. Though the material, weave style, or even brand of the bath towel can make a huge difference on its final cost, the price of a bath towel is typically cheaper than that of a bath sheet.

Having a large bath sheet over a bath towel might seem like the immediate choice, but sometimes it's worth going with the smaller option, especially if you want to save on a high-quality terry cloth. A high-quality bath towel may last you much longer than a bath sheet that uses cheap synthetic materials.

Their small size makes them better suited for drying your hair or other casual uses for drying that might be more comfortable with a smaller towel.

What is a Bath Sheet?

Bath sheets tend to be around 36 x 63 inches, and like bath towels this “standard” can vary depending on the vendor or the location it is purchased. Due to their larger size, bath sheets take more material and cotton to make. As stated before, this difference in size means that bath sheets tend to cost more than bath towels, sometimes even if the bath towel is made with higher-end material or a high-quality weave!

Bath sheets being a larger size means they are more suitable for wrapping around your whole body. If you don’t mind the higher cost, you should make sure that your bath sheet is made with antimicrobial fabrics or a high-quality cotton. More material means that it dries slower as well, so preventing mildew build up is important for these types of towels as well.

Which is Better, Bath Sheets or Bath Towels?

Both types of towels have their advantages. Generally, bath towels are good enough to get the job done and are typically cost efficient! If you’re looking for high luxury, bath sheets are the way to go, especially if they are made with high quality cotton or linen that are extra absorbent and dry much quicker. Unless you are planning on going for the highest quality bath sheet, we recommend going with a high-quality bath towel instead, as it is likely to still be cheaper, and last longer than any normal bath sheet would.

Frequently Asked Questions About Bath Sheets and Bath Towels

Are Beach Towels Just Large Bath Sheets?

Beach towels typically fall around 35 x 63 inches, so they might seem like a good idea to invest in instead, but these towels work differently. Unlike bath sheets, beach towels are made thin, and they dry out much faster. What makes them inefficient as drying towels is that they are not very absorbent, as some of the drying is intended for direct sunlight at the beach to take care of.

Do Bath Sheets Take Longer to Dry Than Bath Towels?

Yes. As stated before, since bath sheets are made with more material, water stays stuck within the fibers for longer periods of time. Unchecked, this can lead to a buildup in mildew, which is why you want to get high-quality materials like cotton or linen, as they tend to be antimicrobial and even dry faster than other types of materials!

How Many Towels Should I Have in the Household?

Depending on how many people you have living at home, you generally want 2 bath towels, 2 bath sheets, and 1 beach towel per person. The second bath towel and bath sheet will serve as spares for when a towel is needed but the other ones are in the wash. Unless you and your family frequently go to the beach, there is not a great need for more than 1 beach towel per person.
