Let’s Talk Linens: Bamboo Sheets vs Cotton Sheets

What Kind of Bed Sheet Should I Look For?

When deciding on what bed sheets to buy, you want to make sure that you’re getting the perfect fit for you, and that includes deciding on what material to use. Today we will be discussing the difference between bamboo and cotton sheets, as well as which is the best choice depending on your personal preferences. If you need any further assistance, feel free to visit Pioneer Linens, or call a store associate of ours at 800-207-5463 to help you find a bed sheet that meets all your needs.

What is a Bamboo Sheet?

While cotton needs no introduction, we feel that “bamboo sheets” do. These types of sheets use a variety of different fabrics that are made from bamboo fibers. Despite all coming from bamboo fibers, these materials (rayon, lyocell, and modal) can have varying effects, and are most often mixed in together in order to achieve a balance in softness, breathability, and durability, that is often equal or greater to the level of quality present in cotton sheets.

The raw material for bamboo is more eco-friendly than cotton, and can come in the same weave styles, like percale and sateen. Bamboo typically requires less pesticides than cotton, and in some cases is made completely chemical free!

What is Special About a Cotton Sheet?

Cotton is the most common material used for bed sheets, and it’s reliable for a reason. It even has several different variations to appeal to a variety of needs. Standard “cotton sheets” are actually made from non-organic cotton and is a good cheap alternative. On the higher end of quality, we have Egyptian cotton, which is far softer and more durable, but also the most expensive. Pima cotton is a good in between for non-organic cotton and the Egyptian cotton price wise but isn’t too far off in terms of good quality.

Cotton tends to get softer after each additional wash, making it perfect as a long-term investment. Some blends of cotton even have moisture wicking, something that is perfect for hot sleepers. In other words, cotton sheets are typically greater at keeping you cool than bamboo sheets.

Which is Better, Bamboo or Cotton?

Both bamboo and cotton have pretty similar advantages, with only a few unique differences to consider for each. Bamboo sheets are normally higher in price and quality than your average cotton sheets, but there are variations of cotton that can achieve the same quality. In general, bamboo is typically the longer lasting of the two while cotton is usually more breathable.

If you find yourself sweating overnight or in need of a light bed sheet, you may prefer the moisture wicking abilities of cotton or even getting a bed sheet with a percale weave. If you’re concerned with the environment or want a bed sheet that will be gentler on your skin and last you a very long time, get yourself a bamboo sheet.
